Expansion Pack launched the Pokémon Card Game in Japan in 1996 and established the visual and mechanical foundation of the hobby. Its 102 cards focus on the original Kanto Pokémon, with Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur leading a lineup that remains instantly recognizable. Simple attacks, evolution chains, Energy cards, and Trainer cards made the set approachable while still offering enough strategy to support the game’s earliest competitive decks.

MoreLess

For collectors, Expansion Pack is the defining vintage Pokémon expansion. Charizard is its undisputed centrepiece, but cards such as Blastoise, Venusaur, Mewtwo, Alakazam, and the three starter evolutions are also enduring favourites. More than any later release, Expansion Pack captures the beginning of the Pokémon card phenomenon and the artwork, characters, and nostalgia that turned it into a global collecting hobby. It became the primary Japanese counterpart to the English *Base Set*, although numbering and a small number of cards differ.
