The master set counts each of its 79 cards once, in any card. It leaves out 63 First Edition and 16 First Edition Holofoil.

HeartGold Collection, released in 2009, revisits Johto through the HeartGold side of the paired LEGEND launch, led by Ho-Oh and a broad selection of returning second-generation Pokémon. The artwork presents Johto with richer colours and more cinematic scenery than the original neo cards.

Ho-Oh LEGEND, Pokémon Prime, and refreshed versions of the Johto starters form the main collector attractions. Because the era was brief, each release contributes a noticeable share of its most recognisable cards. The expansion therefore works well as a self-contained binder project as well as a chapter in the wider history of the game. Its mixture of familiar Pokémon and period-specific presentation makes the full checklist more revealing than a glance at the chase cards alone. Its cards were combined with SoulSilver Collection to create the English HeartGold & SoulSilver expansion, with additional changes to numbering and distribution.
