The master set counts 82 Normal and 16 Holofoil. No card comes in more than one of them, so the master set is the same size as the full set.

Challenge from the Darkness completes the Kanto Gym Leader concept begun in Leaders' Stadium, placing greater emphasis on Blaine, Sabrina, Koga, and Giovanni. Their Pokémon reflect a broad range of battle styles, from Blaine’s powerful Fire types and Koga’s status effects to Sabrina’s Psychic Pokémon and Giovanni’s heavy hitters. Trainer-owned cards and location-based Trainers make the expansion feel like the final stages of a journey through the Kanto League. Several of the era’s most memorable cards appear here, including Blaine’s Charizard, Rocket’s Mewtwo, Giovanni’s Gyarados, and Sabrina’s Alakazam.

The set also contains cards for all eight Gym Leaders, making it a natural companion to Leaders' Stadium and a satisfying conclusion to the original Gym era. For collectors, its appeal lies in the combination of iconic Pokémon and recognizable characters, often shown in more dramatic or personal scenes than their earlier versions. Challenge from the Darkness closes the first major chapter of the TCG with a strong sense of rivalry, progression, and confrontation. It became the primary Japanese counterpart to the English *Gym Challenge*, although numbering and a small number of cards differ.
