The master set counts each of its 111 cards once, in any card. It leaves out 92 First Edition, 92 Unlimited, 20 Unlimited Holofoil, 19 First Edition Holofoil and 3 Jumbo.

Neo Genesis opens the Johto era and introduces the second generation of Pokémon to the English TCG. Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, and their evolutions join headline cards such as Lugia, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, and Meganium. The expansion also brought major gameplay additions: Darkness and Metal became new Energy types, Baby Pokémon appeared for the first time, and Pokémon Tool cards added equipment that could remain attached in play. The expansion closely follows Japan’s Gold, Silver, to a New World..., although the English checklist is not completely identical.

MoreLess

Lugia is the set’s defining collector card, but the three fully evolved Johto starters and cards such as Pichu, Slowking, and Steelix are equally representative of the era. The artwork introduces Johto’s forests, ruins, and quieter rural atmosphere, giving the set a clear visual break from Kanto. As the first Neo expansion, it had the difficult task of expanding both the Pokédex and the rules of the game, and it succeeded in making the TCG feel new without abandoning its original structure. Neo Genesis remains one of the most historically important and beloved vintage releases.
