EX FireRed & LeafGreen returns the TCG to Kanto, reintroducing the original Pokémon through artwork and mechanics inspired by the Game Boy Advance remakes. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle once again anchor the set, while familiar locations and evolution lines give longtime collectors an immediate sense of recognition. The expansion blends nostalgia with the faster, more powerful design of the EX era. It was largely adapted from Japan’s Flight of Legends, with modest changes to card selection and rarity distribution.

Charizard ex, Blastoise ex, and Venusaur ex are natural centrepieces, joined by cards such as Articuno ex, Moltres ex, Zapdos ex, and Mr. Mime ex. Secret rare versions of the three legendary birds add another collecting challenge, and the set’s wide Kanto coverage makes it feel like a modernized successor to the original Base Set. Rather than copying early artwork, it reinterprets the region with new illustrations and contemporary rules. EX FireRed & LeafGreen demonstrated how effectively the TCG could revisit its beginnings without relying entirely on reprints, establishing a pattern of Kanto-focused nostalgia that later expansions would continue.
