The master set counts each of its 83 cards once, in any card. It leaves out 65 First Edition, 65 Unlimited, 18 First Edition Holofoil, 18 Unlimited Holofoil and 3 more in 2 other printings.

Team Rocket shifts the focus from heroic Pokémon Trainers to the villains of the Kanto story. Its defining cards are the Dark Pokémon—twisted or more aggressive versions of familiar evolutions trained under Team Rocket’s influence. Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, Dark Dragonite, and Dark Raichu give the expansion a moodier personality than the sets before it, supported by artwork filled with laboratories, hideouts, and signs of Rocket activity. It closely follows Japan’s Rocket Gang, with Dark Raichu added as the English game’s first secret rare.

MoreLess

The set is especially important to collectors because Dark Raichu became the first English card numbered beyond the stated set total, establishing the idea of the secret rare. Many rare cards again appear in both holographic and non-holographic versions, while the Dark evolution lines create appealing mini-collections. Dark Charizard is the best-known chase card, but the expansion’s real strength is its unified theme: almost every card contributes to the feeling that Team Rocket has taken control. It remains one of the most coherent and recognizable releases from the original era, combining nostalgia with a distinctly rebellious edge.
