The master set counts each of its 151 cards once, in any card. It leaves out 139 First Edition and 12 First Edition Holofoil.

Released in 2001, Pokémon Card★VS builds an entire card pool around Pokémon owned by Johto’s Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and other notable Trainers. Cards such as Jasmine’s Steelix, Karen’s Umbreon, and Lance’s Dragonite turn the set into a character-driven tour of high-level Johto battles.

The ownership-based names, unusually large checklist, and strong links to the Pokémon Crystal era make it a favourite among Japanese-exclusive collectors. That structure makes the set feel almost like a cast of ready-made character decks. For set collectors, the supporting checklist matters almost as much as the headline pulls because it carries the theme from card to card. The expansion therefore works well as a self-contained binder project as well as a chapter in the wider history of the game. Its cards were never localised as one conventional English expansion, leaving many designs unique to Japan.
