The master set counts each of its 132 cards once, in any card. It leaves out 113 First Edition, 113 Unlimited, 19 First Edition Holofoil, 19 Unlimited Holofoil and 3 more in 3 other printings.

Gym Heroes introduces Trainer-owned Pokémon to the English game, replacing generic species with cards connected to specific Kanto Gym Leaders. Brock’s Onix, Misty’s Seadra, Lt. Surge’s Electabuzz, and Erika’s Dragonair are not simply alternate artworks; they reflect the personalities, strategies, and preferred Pokémon of their Trainers. The result is a set that feels closer to the animated series and the Gym challenge structure of the video games than any earlier expansion. It was largely adapted from Japan’s Leaders' Stadium, with modest changes to card selection and rarity distribution.

MoreLess

The card list centres on Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, and Erika, with supporting appearances from other Gym Leaders and Team Rocket. Trainer cards depicting familiar characters and locations strengthen the narrative, while the owned-Pokémon naming system makes each collection feel like part of a particular deck or team. Erika’s Dragonair and Sabrina’s Gengar are among the most admired cards, and many collectors enjoy assembling complete groups for each Trainer. Gym Heroes gave the TCG a stronger sense of character and world-building, showing Pokémon through their relationships with the people who trained them.
