EX Ruby & Sapphire introduces the Hoenn generation and begins a major new era for the Pokémon TCG. Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, and many other Pokémon from the Ruby and Sapphire video games appear for the first time, led by headline cards such as Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert, and the legendary Groudon and Kyogre. A cleaner card design and new terminology help separate the set from the Wizards era. Its primary Japanese counterpart is ADV Expansion Pack, with some cards, rarities, and numbering reorganized for the English release.

MoreLess

Its defining mechanic is Pokémon-ex: powerful cards with higher HP and stronger attacks that give up two Prize cards when Knocked Out. The expansion also introduces Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies as standardized names for special abilities, helping shape gameplay for years to come. Several Pokémon-ex, including Chansey ex, Electabuzz ex, Lapras ex, Magmar ex, Mewtwo ex, and Scyther ex, give the set a mixture of new Hoenn species and familiar favourites. As the first Nintendo-published English expansion, EX Ruby & Sapphire is historically important as both a generational reset and the beginning of the long-running EX Series.
