Diamond & Pearl—Great Encounters focuses on meetings between some of Sinnoh’s most powerful and mysterious Pokémon. Dialga, Palkia, Darkrai, and Cresselia form the legendary core, representing time, space, nightmares, and dreams. The expansion is relatively compact, but its cosmic imagery and concentrated selection of major Pokémon give it a stronger identity than its size might suggest. Its Japanese sources, Moonlit Pursuit and Dawn Dash, were split between Great Encounters and Majestic Dawn rather than mapped one-to-one.

Darkrai LV.X, Cresselia LV.X, Dialga LV.X, and Palkia LV.X are the headline collector cards, while several playable Pokémon and Trainers helped the set make an impact in competitive decks. The contrast between Darkrai and Cresselia is especially prominent, bringing one of Sinnoh’s most recognizable rivalries into the card game. Compared with the broad checklist of Secret Wonders, this set feels more focused and dramatic. Great Encounters captures the idea of rare legendary forces crossing paths, using a small number of high-profile Pokémon to create a memorable chapter in the Diamond & Pearl series. It is an approachable set to collect, with its strongest appeal concentrated in a clear group of LV.X cards.
